Category:Match-3 games

Games in this category involve match together three adjacent pieces which have the same color or are otherwise similar (such as the same shape). Once three or more similar pieces are matched together, they disappear. In some of the games, the player may be "dealt" a set of three or more matching pieces which do not disappear until the player clicks on the set or otherwise interacts with them. In other games, any such sets disappear as soon as they are formed. Bonus points are generally awarded for creating chain reactions, in which the disappearance of one matching set results in the creation of additional sets.

Bejeweled group

In this group, you get a full board of gems (or other pieces) which you must match by swapping two adjacent gems. A move is only valid if it creates a match. The matched pieces disappear and any pieces above them fall down, while new pieces enter the board from the top.

Modified gameplay

  • Hexic: hexagonal grid, and the moves are rotations of 3 adjacent pieces.
  • Chuzzle, Gem Shop: a move consists of shifting a row of pieces rather than swapping 2 adjacent.
  • Chainz 2: you can rotate each link individually, links make matches according to their shape and orientation.
  • Gold Fever (retired): each piece type has a "heads" and "tails" side; a move consists of flipping a piece to the opposite side.

Zuma / Luxor group

A chain of balls enters the game area and travels in a fixed path. You control a "cannon" of some kind and you must shoot balls from the cannon to make a match of 3 or more balls in the chain. You can see the next ball and swap the current ball with the next one (usually with the right mouse button or spacebar). A match leaves a hole in the chain, but if the balls at the two ends of the hole are the same color, the hole will close and the chain will be pushed back. In games where the chain is followed by a "tail piece", the tail piece will also attract the rest of the chain. Multiple chains can enter the level. If a chain hits the tail piece of another, the tail piece disappears and the two chains are merged. Common powerups are: slow, stop, rewind, explosive ball, strike-through piece (destroys everything in a straight line), wild ball and color bomb.

Zuma group

Shoot from the middle from a rotating cannon.

Luxor group

Shoot upwards from a moving cannon at the bottom.

Modified gameplay

  • Dynasty: instead of shooting balls, you hold one ball in your hand which you can swap with the balls in the chain.

Bubble group

This group is similar to the game Puzzle Bobble. A board of pieces, aligned to a hexagonal grid, enter the playing field from the top. You control a cannon which is fixed at the bottom and you must shoot balls onto the board and make matches of 3 or more. If a match makes some balls detached from the rest of the board, those balls will drop and usually give you bonus points. The board constantly moves downward, either in real-time or after a certain number of shots.

  • Dynomite
  • Bubble Town: features a "Ball Mode" in which the pieces are attached to a central piece rather than the ceiling, and the whole board rotates 60 degrees after each shot.
  • Eggz

Same group

These games are similar to Same Game. The board is made up of pieces and you must click on a group of 3 or more matching pieces to make them disappear. You lose if the board or a column is full (depending on the game).

  • Collapse!®, Big Money: blocks come in from the bottom.
  • TriJinx: triangular pieces fall in from the top. Also it's possible to rotate the board to make the pieces fall in a particular direction.
  • Pop-A-Tronic (Retired): Pieces fall in from the top.
  • Night of the Scarecrows: Pieces come in from the top in lines. Columns don't collapse if one is cleared.

Other

These games have a rather unique type of gameplay. They belong to the "Match-3" group because you do need to match 3 of something in them.

  • Joboo's Gems, Zen Gems: Drop gems from the top and match them. New gems come in from the bottom.
  • Cubis, Cubis 2: Shoot cubes and other pieces from the side into a 3-dimensional board.
  • AstroPop: From a ceiling of bricks, you can grab same-colored bricks and release them. You must match 4 in this game.
  • Magic Match, Magic Match 2, 4 Elements, Azkend: You get a board full of pieces and must make matches by dragging the cursor over the matching pieces.
