My tip for Mozaki blocks is to not bother making really big blocks (although making big blocks is fun). Instead, make connections as fast as possible to level up quickly. The point values in the high levels, even for individual pieces and small blocks, is higher than even fairly large blocks in the lower levels. As some people have said here before, build from the outside in, so that, when you change levels, the colors change appropriately. If the board is getting full, and you want to use a fire pot, use it right after making a match. The mistake is to use it in a panic when the clock is low, and then you can't play the pieces fast enough to make a connection. If you have a piece of a chain that's stranded (far from it's color edge), leave it until you get a fire pot or the colors change. If you chase after it to try to clear it, you'll wind up cutting off other colors from the center and making a mess.
