Tips

The scoring on 9-ball:

  • 100 points for hitting the object ball (the lowest numbered ball on the table - it pulses to let you know which one it is)
  • 200 points for hitting the object ball after hitting one bumper (or 300 after 2 bumpers, and so on)
  • 1000 points for making any ball after hitting the object ball - it does not even matter if you scratch
  • 2000 points for any ball left on the table after you legally pocket the 9-ball
  • 5000 points for a perfect rack

The most points you can score on a single rack would be by making the 9-ball - and only the 9-ball - on the break. This would give you 100 for hitting the object ball (the 1), 1000 for making a ball (the 9), 16000 for the balls left on the table after making the 9 (1 through 8), and 5000 for a perfect rack for a total of 22,100. I have only done this once in over 200 games - more than 1000 racks.

The way they want you to play the game is to hit the 1-ball until you make it, then the 2, then the 3, and so on until you clear the table by hitting and sinking the 9. This could give you say 10 x 100 for your hits (assuming you only miss one shot), 9 x 1000 balls made, and 5000 for a perfect rack if you always hit the ball you're supposed to and never scratch - a total of about 15,000 per rack. If you are exceptionally quick and accurate, you could get through 5 racks in the allotted 5-minute time period. I used to play this way and scored about the same as the others in the top-score list, about 70 to 75,000.

If you don't worry about making the 1-ball at all - or even about hitting the 1-ball until you are ready - you can increase your score quickly. Hit the rack lightly so that the balls scatter only slightly and the cue ball is left near the original rack location along with a few other balls, including the 9-ball. Using very small draws on the cue stick, push the 9-ball until it is in front of a pocket, then push any other balls around until there is no other ball between the 1-ball and the 9-ball. Get the cue ball directly behind the 1-ball and then hit it toward the 9-ball. When the 9-ball goes in you will get 17,000 points and a new rack to start over. I have done this in 4 shots and 15 seconds, but it normally takes me about 10 shots and more like 45 seconds to a minute. Just once per minute and you beat everyone in the high score list but me. To beat me you would have to do it 9 times.
